Those who have experienced a true spiritual awakening, or desarollo as we call it in Espiritismo, know that it’s not all rainbows and unicorns and sudden all-knowningness and calmness and certainty.

In fact, it’s usually the opposite.

Spiritual Awakenings are often quite rude. They pull the rug out from beneath us, uproot every comfort, and push us beyond what we believe our capacity to be.

As exciting as the awareness of our spiritual gifts expanding may be, the experience may also be accompanied by physical pain or discomfort, emotional distress, and overwhelm with the rapid growth and awareness around our gifts.

The upheaval is not forever, though. The spirits grant us the sweetness with the sour. After the Tower, comes the Star, our relief, the restoration of faith, the presence of hope in the absence of knowing.

During these times, it can be tempting to lean into our newly activated psychic or spiritual abilities - and there isn’t anything wrong with doing so.

With that said, it’s important to have rooting in your foundational practices, and to spend more time with them than the expanding abilities themselves.

Spiritual awakening is a time of great vulnerability. We become like newborn babes with soft spots on our head (this same spot on the head is where our Ori rests) - which is why keeping your head covered or veiled is especially helpful at this time.

We tend to be more susceptible to turbulent spirits, cult-like spiritual teachers, and even spiritual psychosis.

We do our due diligence by leaning into grounding, cleansing, and protection practices. By caring for our bodies, our first altar, as best we can. Drinking plenty of water, eating nourishing meals, resting as much as possible.

Once our awakening reaches a plateau, we can begin enjoying our newly expanded gifts of the spirit with more control and consistency.

It’s not unusual, once we plateau, to experience the come-down blues. Awakening, be it scary or exciting (or both), is a huge high, an adrenaline rush. It’s normal to experience a bit of depression, sadness, or fatigue as the awakening mellows out.

Sometimes practitioners confuse the plateau for their new gifts suddenly being gone, when the reality is that they are settling into a place that is manageable.

Signs of Spiritual Awakening:

  • physical discomfort. the feeling that your spirit is growing to big for your skin. skin feels stretched too thin.

  • frustration, detachment , or disinterest with things that are becoming more obviously out of alignment for you. this could be a job, a habit, a routine, a relationship.

  • change in priorities and/or values

  • loss of or shifts in friendships.

  • reevaluation of beliefs, challenging of beliefs.

  • active dreams, lucid dreaming, remembering dreams more frequently, more interest/engagement in imaginative play, thoughtful reflections

  • noticeable changes in your behavior; increased kindness (not the same as being nice), increased compassion, letting go of disruptive habits, etc

  • deepening interest and engagement in your emotional wellbeing

  • deepening sense of self-honesty and self-accountability

  • tendency to slow down, reflect back

  • sense of interconnectivity/oneness/interdependence

Sometimes, these symptoms can make you feel like "you know what, this is bonkers but i'm okay?!". Sometimes these symptoms can leave you feeling agitated, edgy, confused.

Supportive Practices & Tools for Awakening:

  • taking a break from divination. i know, seems counter-intuitive. but sometimes when we are already overwhelmed with our personal spiritual expansion, divination can feel overwhelming or confusing.

  • COVER. YOUR. HEAD. You are a spiritual newborn, and that soft spot on your crown leaves you sensitive to the spirits and energies all around. Wear a hat, scarf, bonnet, whatever, expecially when you leave the house/go to populated places

  • Drink plenty of water. It’s wild how often I see in clients (and myself!) that the feeling of spiraling is connected to dehydration.

  • Eat nourishing, filling foods. Do your best to not skip meals.

  • Grounding practices are your bff! Eft tapping, putting your hands in soil, envisioning roots sprouting from your body and connecting to Mother Earth, sitting outside, engaging with plant medicine through teas and tinctures, etc. Let our Good Mother Earth pour into you.

  • Cleansing! Take epsom salt baths, keep your selenite wand near, put your favorite cleansing spiritual cologne in a spray bottle and spray liberally as needed.

  • Protection! Covering your head is of course spiritual protection! Wearing any protective talismans you have, tying a red string to your ankle or around your midsection, praying for protection/calling on your guardian spirits.

  • Rest!!! Take naps. Let yourself skip social engagements to recharge your battery. Don’t go above and beyond at work rn. Get cozy and rest.

  • Limit your time spent on social media apps.
